This article explains why, in a competitive environment, we cannot simply go in a straight line toward our goals. Instead, we reach our goals only through bouncing off of other people. When we want a specific reaction from someone, we often get the oppsite. This is known in psychology as reactance. Each interaction changes our direction in some small way, putting us on a slightly different path.
