This article warns that, when we are advancing our position, a lack of holding power either in our current position or in a future position can have disastrous effects. When evaluating future position, we must take these effects into account. A lack of holding power in our current positions makes moving on from where we are a one-way proposition. When moving into a position with little or no holding power, we must consider what that means to our next move. The danger in positions without holding power is not from our opponents but from losing our supporters. Whenever people talk about "getting on a slippery slope," they are talking about the dangers encountered in getting into position lacking holding power.
