This article explains that all positions depend a flow of resources and information. These paths are potential choke points. A break anywhere in the path destroys its utility. Our vulnerability in transportation and communication only becomes visible during environmental "fire storms". This vulnerability is especially visible during the rare firestorms that panic the public. During such a panic, communication lines and transportation systems are jammed and unusable. Smaller scale firestorms, such as a denial of service attacks on a internet server, are much more common but much less visible forms of the same concept.
