This article explains how, by definition, dealing with climatic threats fall outside the normal channels of organizational responsibility. During a firestorm, the chaotic, confusing external competitive environment intrudes directly into the normally orderly world of planning and organization. The normal result in organizations is fear. While organizations are less vulnerable than individuals to an environment attack, such attacks create a crisis of confidence. A dramatic, threatening change in climate arises, people's faith in the organization is often shattered. The threat of the firestorm is then amplified by the organizational chaos.
