Modern Competition

Question:

Are there books that translate the methods from “Book of Five Rings” & “The Art of War” into a usable manner within modern everyday life & business environments? If so, what are they?

Gary's Answer:

I have adapted Sun Tzu’s work, line-by-line to many different modern forms of competition, everything from sales, marketing, sports, etc. Eleven of my books have won business awards in seven different non-fiction categories. You can see a complete list here. Almost all contain the complete text of Sun Tzu.

I actually tried to do the same thing with the Book of Five Rings, but I just couldn’t do it. The book spends too much time on the differences between the short sword and the long sword. Though this is done on a philosophical level, there just isn’t a natural analogy to modern competition where the lessons work usefully.

The beauty of Sun Tzu is that he focuses on the only weapon that is timeless: the human mind. His methods work in any form of competition because the battleground is how we think about competition.

However, to make Sun Tzu’s methods more usable, I did another work, written in the short, easy lesson of a how-to book, The Golden Key to Strategy, which won the Ben Franklin Awards as Best Self-Help book.
