This article explains that, since strategic positions are paths, we must see all current strategic positions as temporary. Our current position is always just the starting point. Where our path takes us is made possible by the conditions in our environment but determined by our skill at making every day decisions. The temporary nature of strategic positions is a problem. It means that, given bad choices or just inactivity, our positions will naturally decline over time. It is easy to make the mistake of thinking that success depends on luck. We can see the luck involved in other people's success stories. We cannot see how the decisions that they made positioned them in the right place at the right time.
