Play Book Organization and Sun Tzu's Original Text

All the concepts in our Sun Tzu's Warrior Play Book are taken directly from his The Art of War.  However, they have been reorganized for easier understanding. This page briefly explains that organization.

Section One: 1.0 Strategic Positioning : The core of this section comes from Chapter One: Planning, describing the five basic elements and the value of information, but it is put in the more general framework of positioning, which comes from Chapter 4, Positioning. It also brings in basic ideas from the other "positioning" chapters, Chapter Two, Going to War and Chapter Thirteen, Using Spies.

Section Two: 2.0 Developing Perspective : The core of this section comes from Chapter Thirteen: Using Spies. It also brings in more advanced ideas from the other "positioning" chapters, Chapter One: Planning and Chapter Two: Going to War.

Section Three: 3.0 Identifying Opportunities : This section draws from many different sections of the original text, mostly the chapters on expansion. Its initial section on economics comes from Chapter Two: Going to War. It then moves to opportunity creation which comes from Chapter 6, Weakness and Strength.

Section Four: 4.0 Leveraging Probability :  The initial section on the forms of territory comes primarily from Chapter 9, Armed March.  The next section on the six surface areas and competitive weakness comes from Chapter 10, Field Position.

Section Five: 5.0 Minimizing Mistakes: The core of this section come primarily from Chapter 8, Adapting to the Situation. However, that chapter refers to ideas in the next three long chapters on expansion and those ideas are drawn together here.

Section Six: 6.0 Situation Response : This section draws together ideas from the chapters on expansion but its bulk is from Chapter 11, Nine Terrains.

Section Seven: 7.0 Creating Momentum: The bulk of this section comes from Chapter 5, Force .

Section Nine: 9.0 Understanding Vulnerability : The bulk of this section comes from Chapter 12, Attacking With Fire.
